How to use ibus-pinyin?

Post by mimosa »

I just gave ibus a try for typing Chinese, and while all other entry methods appear to work fine, when I select pinyin (the only one any use to a novice like me ;)), as soon as I type anything the icon reverts to the keyboard-with-globe, and no conversion occurs. The selection tool doesn't appear.

I'd be grateful for any pointers :)

mimosa,
just trying to play only..

1. on terminal do
wayne[~]$ /usr/bin/ibus-setup

2. on pop up windows ibus preferences, click input method.
3. click select method >> chinese >>and add a few
for my playing, I added
chinese-pinyin

謝謝你, Wayne. As I said in my original post, all the methods work except for Pinyin. I turn it on, and as soon as I press a key in the window, the panel icon reverts to the keyboard and globe, and I'm typing English.

The above was written with py(m17n), which does the job, but I'd like to try ibus-pinyin if I can get it to work. As you can see, I favour full-form characters; I wonder whether ibus-pinyin might be more friendly towards them than ibus-m17n? Also, for less common characters, it would be useful to be able to specify the tone, as in your example.
