Re: Salix Live Xfce 15.0 BETA3

Good point!

This time I chose ext2 in case it would improve performance, but the result was much the same. The system installed on the second USB was so slow as to be unusable. But the instonusb copy is fast and responsive, and also, completed within minutes.

Re: Salix Live Xfce 15.0 BETA3

I've downloaded it, and will set it up to install on USB when I go to the dentist this afternoon. :D

Re: Salix Live Xfce 15.0 BETA2

It did finally complete, though the last part installing Grub took a very long time. Here is the whole output: /usr/sbin/sli-location-detection.sh: line 32: ((: > 1678736 : syntax error: operand expected (error token is "> 1678736 ") /usr/sbin/sli-location-detection.sh: line 32: ((: > 1678...

Re: Salix Live Xfce 15.0 BETA2

I've just had another go in more or less the same way (but no swap this time) using different USB sticks. The target stick was brand new. Both sticks work well with instonusb, which completes in a matter of minutes. The installation took about two hours. I'm posting this before rebooting to see how ...

Re: Salix Live Xfce 15.0 BETA2

I think when Grub was installed, something was sent to BIOS to put it first. I put rEFInd back manually. If I try it again, I will use ELILO.

The most puzzling thing to me is it is so much slower than the Live USB.

Also when I closed it down, it hung. I had to use the hardware off switch.

Re: Salix Live Xfce 15.0 BETA2

Well, finally it worked! The system just booted straight into the USB, with no need to go through BIOS. However I will when I reboot ... Comments so far: - the codecs installer installs QT, which I vaguely remember being mentioned for the 15.0 - networking is disabled by default, ditto; but it is en...

Re: Salix Live Xfce 15.0 BETA2

I'm just posting the end of the output here - next time round I will redirect the whole output to a file. The installation took rather a long time - over an hour and a half. Let's see if it boots this time! OK: /lib/modules/5.15.63/kernel/fs/fuse/fuse.ko added. 55763 blocks /boot/initrd.gz created. B...

Re: Salix Live Xfce 15.0 BETA2

It's not that I want the other systems to be detected, it's that for some reason, SLI is doing that and then I am unable to boot the system on the USB it creates. It seems that it is booting the kernel from my existing installations and then trying to boot the USB installation, which fails because o...

Re: Salix Live Xfce 15.0 BETA2

Thanks Didier - with luck, that would allow me to make a working real install from the Salix Live USB to another one. However my purpose here is just testing and it should ideally "just work" as is, whether on a machine ignorant of Salix, or the one you have at home! Am I right in thinking...
