Problems with gst-plugins-good in Salix64 13.1?

Post by hcl »

I did a new install of Salix 13.1 x86_64 a few days ago and was having problems playing FLAC files using Quodlibet and Exaile. I noticed there were two versions of gst-plugins-good: 0.10.22-x86_64-1 and 0.10.22-x86_64-1gv. The latter was installed. I ran Quodlibet at the terminal and saw lots of errors when playing FLAC, such as "gstreamer encountered a general stream error". Similarly with Exaile.

So I removed the 0.10.22-x86_64-1gv version and installed the 0.10.22-x86_64-1 instead. Quodlibet was then able to play FLAC files and the errors at the terminal were gone.

No such problems here. Do they files play anyway, but you get more output in the terminal? What are the exact errors?

It's weird that I cannot reproduce the problem now with the system that I'm working on, even after reverting the Slackware version (the one that ends in "-1") back to the Salix version (the one that ends in "-1gv"). Everything is working fine. I have installed other things since then (such as the multilib libraries) so that may have changed things.

So I did a fresh install on another partition and reproduced the problem with it. I did a basic install, ran gslapt-get, clicked on "Update", then installed packages "quodlibet" and "salix-codecs-installer", then use the Salix code installer to install codecs, installed packages "gst-plugins-good" (the Salix version) and "flac".

When I ran Quodlibet at the terminal and tried to play a flac file, the following error messages appeared at the terminal:

Code: Select all

W: GStreamer encountered a general stream error.

Quodlibet did not play the FLAC files. It just showed next to each song title an icon that looked like the traffic sign for "no entry".

Can you please clear that up? If you used the salix-codecs-installer to install codecs, then gst-plugins-good and flac should have been installed anyway and there should be no reason to install them separately.

Yes, that was exactly what I did. I did the install twice tonight and I think what happened on the night before may be caused by not exiting from gslapt-get when I ran salix-codecs-installer. So gslapt-get didn't know that gst-plugins-good was already installed by salix-codecs-installer.

After each new install tonight, quodlibet was able to play flac files just fine, with no errors at the terminal. So I don't know what's going on now. Maybe the gst-plugins-good package was not downloaded correctly previously? But gslapt-get would have detected it when it verified the checksum, wouldn't it?

I'm happy that things are working now. Thanks a lot for a great OS!

Still, there should have been no problem at all, even if gslapt wasn't aware that gst-plugins-good was already installed. It would try to install it and find that it is already installed.
