Yes, I think it is the compression that makes it less clear.
I made a screenshot with a little brighter gtk theme, uncompressed, about 1 mb here:

There you can judge again.
But it is a fact that some people like cleartype, and some don't. I like it because it shows the characters in better contrast, which makes text easier to read during a long time. (i prefer the non-anti-alias terminus fonts the best, but I don't like that in every application, so that is where the cleartype patches help me, btw cleartype is free now, i think)
btw, support a bit harder, they are behind with 2 goals against Frankfurt
