Thanks. Just ran across this yesterday. You have given a new life to a gateway PIII laptop. Nice.

I've got myself in a pickle with privoxy. I vaguely remember something similar when I first installed it in xfce and xmonad, so this may well have nothing to do with ratpoison as such. However I can't find any related posts on the forum.

Basically, privoxy only seems to work if I call it manually like this:

Code: Select all

#privoxy /usr/local/etc/privoxy/config
which is where the latest version downloaded from the website puts it (/usr/local/sbin that is). /etc/rc.d/rc.privoxy correctly indicates the location of the config file, and /usr/local/sbin is in root's $PATH. rc.privoxy explicitly counsels against putting a call to it in any of the files in rc.d; I did try doing just that, in rc.local:

Code: Select all

/etc/rc.d/rc.privoxy start
and with that line in, privoxy is mentioned twice during startup, but despite the fact that file points correctly to the config file, it didn't work. I took it out again.

If I call privoxy manually with no argument, it returns "unable to find config" in whatever the current directory is; and that is presumably what happens during startup, because although I can see it being called, it doesn't work and isn't running, which certainly suggests the call failed.

A similar issue has been discussed on the LinuxQuestions.org forums: [here I tried to post the URL, but wasn't allowed to do so; you can just search over there for "Privoxy doesn't always start on boot"]

Thanks john256. Those posts were interesting, but I'm beginning to suspect I just didn't install it properly. For instance, I found a man page file buried away in /usr/local/, but 'man privoxy' can't get at it, any more than privoxy itself seems to be able to find its own configuration file, which does seem to be the immediate problem. The logfile simply records that privoxy failed to run a second instance of itself, that time I put it in rc.local, but it was already being called from wherever it is supposed to be called from.

I wish my sense of déjà vu about this were more specific: then I would be able to say something useful about whether it is behaving *differently* with ratpoison beta. Also I'd probably be able to fix it! :)

I have just tested it on virtual box. Everything seems to work fine. I tried all the main applications, including installation of packages, media package installation and testing youtube etc etc. And honestly speaking, I really like it. On the setup, I could not replay a dvd though. But perhaps it's just my dvd. Could anyone confirm that playing dvds works ok with this edition?

Anyway, many thanks Gapan for this edition. (by the way, PyRoom is one of my favourite applications. I use it all the time.

I think I played a file, using whatever the video application is - but I don't think I tested a physical dvd. I'll try both and post if anything doesn't work.

Currently working in my xmonad comfort zone ;)

@tsuren

I really like the look of PyRoom! I just installed it in my xmonad Salix. It's obviously particularly well-suited to Ratpoison, but quite apart from that, what an elegant idea!

I can report that Whaaaw!!'s performance seems to be erratic. One .avi file played with no problems, another caused it to crash. I tried two actual DVDs, and both played ok, but with no sound. This isn't because of some zero volume default - I checked alsamixer and the program's own volume control was at about two thirds; and anyway, The Big Sleep had sound.

Mplayer managed the .avi that crashed before, but it won't play DVDs at all. Note that it says there is no sound:

Code: Select all

lucy[~]$ mplayer dvd:// -dvd-device /dev/sr0

I installed vlc and that plays everything. The extra libraries and kitchen sink that come with it haven't changed the behaviour of the other players, though.

I've finally managed to sort privoxy out, though it's untidy. I don't think I said above that installing from src failed

Code: Select all

Slackware package /usr/src/slapt-src/network/privoxy/privoxy-3.0.12-i486-2_SBo.txz created.

Installing package privoxy-3.0.12-stable-src.tar.gz...
ERROR: unknown package type: privoxy-3.0.12-stable-src.tar.gz
ERROR: Can't open package file. (privoxy-3.0.12-stable-src.tar.gz)
ERROR: Package installation failed!
spkg -u --reinstall --install-new privoxy-3.0.12-stable-src.tar.gz Failed

root[privoxy-3.0.17-stable]#

so I downloaded the source from the privoxy website, with the unsatisfacory results I've described:

Code: Select all

#tar -zxvf privoxy-3.0.17-stable-src.tar.gz
$cd privoxy-3.0.17-stable
Now I've uninstalled and followed the instructions associated with the failed slackbuild. Clearly, first:

Code: Select all

#groupadd -g 206 privoxy
#useradd -u 206 -g 206 -c "Web Proxy" -d /dev/null -s /bin/false privoxy
then, in the unpacked source directory from privoxy's site:

Code: Select all

$ autoheader
$autoconf
$./configure
$make
#make install USER=privoxy GROUP=privoxy #this suggestion given by ./configure --help
Finally, returning to the slackbuild instructions, rc.privoxy needs to be called from rc.local, as detailed in README.SLACKWARE.

The result is, privoxy is still called twice (the "AN other distro" install I did must place a call to it somewhere in the startup scripts), but now at least it works :o

Most of this will be obvious, but I thought a comprehensive post might be more useful than a sketchier one.
