I've downloaded the linksys drivers to a portable drive using a windows pc .txz I assume is the correct extension. Now I don't know how to install them. I have been told to use rpm or red hat but I can find neither. I was assuming gsplat is a similar program but it seem to not want to install from my portable drive. The programs I am trying to install are the linksys and wine. Both are for i486 which is the number I see when I did dmesg. I have book on Linux but it is mostly red hat and some fedora and the command don't seem to match in all cases. Is there a manual I can get. I really want Linux to work for me. I am growing to like it but I just don't understand much of it. I might try to create another salix ISO and see if it was just a corrupted download. But my main question is how do I install programs to salix without an internet connection?

You can open a terminal window, then use the command "su" to become root. After that you can use "installpkg" to install txz packages.
You might want to have a look into http://www.slackbook.org/

I'm not entirely sure what all of this means nor do i know how to affect any of this but I'll post my dmesg and maybe one of you can point me in the right direction. Thank you for the slackbook link.

Re: how do i run program?

Post by gnomic »

Hmmm. This is a forum for problems with Salix. However I am not sure I am seeing problems with Salix here. What I think I'm seeing is a machine with significant hardware problems which probably needs at least some components replaced. Without wishing to be rude I am also seeing a user who is out of his depth (assuming you're a guy).

A couple of suggestions. Get yourself another machine which is known to be fully functional. Something that's not a Dell might be a good idea, Dell is on my personal do not buy list. Or get someone who knows their stuff to look your box over and see if they can identify the problem(s).

Trying to connect to the internet via a Blackberry is probably a job for someone with more expertise than you. Is there no other way to get internet connectivity?

You might want to try other Linux live CDs. Have you looked at Puppy? It's a small download and has quite good hardware support.

It seems to me the scope of your problems here is such that you are probably not going to get the help you need because you need so much help. Forums like these are good for resolving specific issues with relatively straightforward solutions. Unfortunately they can't provide the knowledge which takes most Linux users months or years to acquire overnight.

By the way, have you taken the lid off the Dell and checked it for accumulated dust, reseated the RAM chips, checked that connecting cables are firmly attached and so on?

We could look at the output of lspci and lsmod commands, but you probably need to be sure that your computer actually has reliable hardware first.

Re: how do i run program?

I switched to Mint 9 and used their memtest and that all passed. I clean my pc inside and out at least twice a month. Everything is working as should as far that goes. The only thing I can't really check is the motherboard itself which was my original assumption until linux started up just fine. I had a bad download of salix I've run it since then and have had an easier time with the OS. The only issue is my ignorance of how to move packages in functioning software. Using the internet on a blackberry is as easy as on a pc. I have no problem downloading the packages I'm just not sure how to use .tar versus mbz or tzx tgx. The file extensions are new to me. Nobody has told me I need to learn c++ to use linux and I find it easier than windows for most things. It will detect my wireless in lsusb but then iwconfig tells me I have no extension. I've switched to a pci adapter thinking it was an issue with the usb. I get a more detailed report from lspci and with all my network info (ip ssid bssid and mac) correct. The iwconfig won't acknowledge the wireless. So I think I'll have to get a wired connection. I was hoping to avoid the extra expense. The packages don't seem to be perfectly compatable across distros. So if I download it to my phone I don't know how to get it to work on my pc. Some will start automatically others I have to use the terminal but most of the time linux will try to access the web to get me the driver. Which is ridiculous when you have no internet connection on that machine. Its obvious it is an error on m
y part somewhere but I'll work it out linux isn't that hard until you get to the development side. I'm reading linux from scratch and the salix and slackware literature that is available so I'll figure it out. Thanks for the help you have given me I actually learned a lot.

You'll have to differentiate between binary packages and source packages. What you need in salix is slackware binary packages, they usually have the .txz and .tgz extensions and their names are formatted like name-version-arch-number.t[gx]z. Most .tar.gz or .tar.bz2 or tar.xz files are source packages, you can't install them directly on your system, you'll have to compile the software first to do that. Not that hard, but probably you need to get yourself better acquainted with linux first.

If you can post what lsusb and lspci are reporting here, we can probably tell you if you need something extra to get them to work, like proprietary firmware.

They are not at all. Don't expect anything from another distribution to work. Salix uses the slackware package format and all slackware packages are compatible with it. There are ways to get other package formats (.rpm, .deb) working with salix, but it's not recommended to do that.

Where there is a will there is a way. And you seem to want it bad enough... ;)

You might find some more helpful link on this thread: http://www.salixos.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=30&t=852

The main difference in Linux package management, vs Windows, is that it is highly centralized. You do not generally need to download separate package & then install them individually, but instead connect to a centralized package repository with the help of a package manager which offers browsing, installing, updating, removing packages, etc.

Although geared to Debian/Ubuntu distro types, you might find the following article useful: http://blogs.computerworld.com/installi ... dows_users

Packages made for Debian/Ubuntu type distro (deb) or for Redhat/Fedora type distro (rpm) are not directly usable in a Slackware type distro (tgz/txz) which is why initially you might want to avoid downloading individual packages & use the centralized package manager instead (slapt-get/gslapt in the case of Salix). Of course, as you grow in knowledge & experience, you will find out that it is only the packaging & envelope that differs & there are plenty of ways to adapt or 'translate' packages from one distro to the other, or better yet, build a package from source. But that is an advanced usage, usually performed by folks who love to tinker & put their hand under the hood to finetune their system to the Nth degree.

Slackware type distro, but also Arch linux, Gentoo & a few others are usually geared to such "DIY" type of folks, while Ubuntu, Mandriva, Mint, Fedora, OpenSuse, etc... are geared to "users" type of folks who just wants things to just work.

Salix is made for the "lazy DIY" type of folks, they like to tinker, but not with boring repetitive chores. :D

You mentioned Mint & it is a very good distro for a new comer that recently switched from Windows to Linux. it might not be a bad idea to stick with it for awhile as you learn & get familiar with the basics & the new mind frame that switching to a new Operating System like Linux engenders.

Hope this helps. :)

You can also have a look at Peppermint OS, which is based on Mint ;)

I am happy to announce I have the Internet up and running. Newbie mistakes i suppose. First i had to be logged in as root for ndiswrapper to recognize the proper inf file. second i never new how to set the essid (iwconfig wlan0 essid any) iwconfig still says no extensions so i thought i had failed until i pointed at the networks icon to change some settings. Then i noticed i had 4 networks available. Success! A little embarrassed to be honest but i thought I'd post this anyway. Thank you guys for all the help. Doing it all as root made the difference.
