Ok, playing an unencrypted DVD on Whaawmp:

Code: Select all

Can you play the DVD with mplayer and post all output that mplayer generates?

Just for the record. I have tried Parole with a DVD and I get the same; no sound. I have also tried the other options in gstreamer-properties; that doesn't work either.

@lmello
that shows that the movie stream in the DVD is somehow damaged. That is probably what's causing this. MPlayer probably is more error resilient than gstreamer is. Perhaps a newer gstreamer (in salix 14.0) will fix this.

@Dags
Thanks. That proves it's not a whaawmp specific thing, it's more likely that gstreamer doesn't tolerate the slight errors that the DVDs probably have.

Regarding the "no DVD sound" part:

I managed to coax a "Your GStreamer installation is missing a plug-in" error from the console, searched for that along with the word DVD, and stumbled across this from the Ubuntu folks:

"there is no audio for LATM-AAC recordings only ones with AC3"

"open ~/.gstreamer-0.10
remove or rename the registry.x86_64.bin
Open your music player.
it'll regenerate the registry file and correctly use the aac plugin."

I can test it with a fresh install as well as with other DVDs, but I renamed my ~/.gstreamer-0.10/registry.i486.bin file, fired up whaawmp, and had DVD sound for the first time.

Ah, thanks sojurn. That explains why I or others couldn't reproduce it. It's a matter of some old settings that somehow were left behind.

I like whaaw, and just wasn't happy with having it so close like that, since it plays everything else so well. There is another question though, or two actually. I guess the Stream/DVD menu is for only after you start playing a movie, not before? And right at the beginning there is a screen with "Select options" with a title and/or channel number. If I select "1" I get this:

** Message: pygobject_register_sinkfunc is deprecated (GstObject)
libdvdread: Using libdvdcss version 1.2.10 for DVD access
libdvdread: Can't stat 1
No such file or directory
/usr/lib/python2.6/site-packages/whaawmp/gui/main.py:943: GtkWarning: Unable to retrieve the file info for `dvd://1/': The specified location is not supported
gtk.main()

And in a pop-up window:

"Could not open resource for reading.
resindvdsrc.c(364): rsn_dvdsrc_start (): /GstPlayBin2:player/GstURIDecodeBin:uridecodebin0/RsnDvdBin:source/resinDvdSrc:dvdsrc:
system error: No such file or directory"

Its not a bad problem, since I can just play the DVD without selecting anything (and then once it starts playing open the menu if I want). Am I missing something here?

I don't think you're missing anything. This seems like a small bug with whaawmp. The correct way to address the first track of a dvd would be "dvd://1". Notice the missing trailing /, which is added by whaawmp, that's probably why it doesn't play.
