Wicd Upgrade

Postby laplume » 5. May 2012, 15:11

Hello,
Just upgraded today Wicd installing the 1.7.2.4-i486-1gv_salix13.0 package today. The machine gets connected but I cannot open wicd anymore from the tray icon to check available network, as I was able to do till now. Moreover, if I try to start wicd from the main menu application is not starting. Any way to fix this?
Running Salix 13.0.2. xfce.

Thanks in advance for help
Antonio

Update: for the time being just rolled back to 1.6.2.2-i486-1gv. All working fine again.

Thanks for the report. Blame me for trusting Slackware. They updated their wicd package to the buggy (for other reasons) 1.7.2.4 and I thought that they at least tested 1.7.2.4 under Slackware 13.0, but of course they didn't. Wicd 1.7.2.4 needs gtk+2>=2.16 and only 2.14 is available in Slackware 13.0. Go figure.

I removed the 1.7.2.4 version from the 13.0 repositories. So, reverting to 1.6.2.2, is the right thing to do anyway.

Thanks for info Gapan. To play safe I had excluded wicd from upgrades via gslapt anyway.

Who would be a package management repository maintainer?

Not all of us demand omnipotence.

Unless of course you are a nameless distribution that demands omnipotence of market share at the expense of others, and makes obsene amounts of profit by spreading ignorance and failing to provide support.
Just saying ;)

The rest of us will work it out :D

Sorry JRD,Thenktor

It was more in response to Gapan 'ironically trusting Slackware'(better than Altair interpreters,i think so!)
I just have a lot of respect for anyone who maintains, develops or just has the passion enough to learn, the demands of trying to understand all the various compatibilities and idiosyncracities is quite a challenge ,i was simply empathising.

However, the difficulties of getting a context across in text based communication are well known, also differences in irony, wit and sense of humour (in my country they dont even HAVE a sense of humour, unless you judge 'kill the pariah' funny :? )

Also,i understand ..various quips across the forum ..makes it difficult for moderators and users to help each other in technical problems .

Apologies,i didnt intend to be a pain..but im aware i could be interpreted as so .. im just enthusiastic and trying to be friendly and fun.Ill be more thoughtful in the future.

And everyone ..enjoy SalixOS ..and technology ...its crazy fantastic :D

PS- With regards to WICD ,it seems to be a reoccuring issue for most of all distros, and appears to be something that relates to the brand and/or configuration of the wireless chip...a simple precaution beforehand would be check http://www.wicd.net/ however currently their Hardware Table link manifests as HTTP 404  ..so...... :? .maintaining websites is difficult too?
Ergo-SalixOS recognised ALL of MY hardware,so im a happy bunny
