A Control Panel

If you have any suggestions or ideas about improving Salix, here's the place to post them.

Very attractive!

I do feel that what something like this adds to the existing arrangement depends very much on the way information is provided. An experienced user can access these tools in various ways already. To return to the example I gave before, it still seems odd that I can save my sound settings (including volume) here, but not change anything except the card. That's not a problem for me, but if it still were (and it has been), I think I would be baffled just as much with a control centre as without one.

A minor point - it's "centre" in British English, which is what my locale is set as. ;) I notice the forum spell checker is also a yank!

Lol:
Code: Select all
Icon 'image-missing' not present in theme

After replacing 'image-missing' with 'vlc' in the python script it works ;)

Good.
Some about application selection : the selection rectangle is large and this is good. But the area where you can click to select it is not the same (only the icon and the text itself), it's a bit weird. Could it be modified ? (I guess not cause it's a GTK thing...)

It looks great Akuna.
Although programs don't run is single view. (mock-up I assume, rather than an over-sight).

Erm.. yes, of course

Thanks. Here is the working 'single view' version:
http://people.salixos.org/akuna/testing ... h-1plb.txz
http://people.salixos.org/akuna/testing ... h-1plb.dep
http://people.salixos.org/akuna/testing ... h-1plb.md5

But yes, these are all previews, there is much room for improvement.
Do not hesitate to post your suggestions or remarks, it is very helpful. Thank you :)

TODO:
- Focus should be on only one application at a time in the single view layout
- Customizing choice of applications in preferences
- Customizing choice of categories in preferences
- Finetune sizes & position
- Make preferences stick
- Hide categories with no items
- Add KDE support
- Add non-root application management

EDIT: See latest version below

Just wondering if rebuild icon cache is just system, or local(~/.icons) too.
I guess a rebuild fonts cache (fc-cache) wouldn't go a miss too. ( might make someone's life easier).
"Processes running" (htop) might be good in system section.
& maybe "System Profiler and Benchmark" (hardinfo) http://hardinfo.berlios.de/HomePage
I don't think Salix has a Sys info & benchmark program atm.

AFAIK the 'Rebuild Icon Cache' tool only works on '/usr/share/icons/'.

Hardinfo is now in the current repository :).

And the latest version:

http://people.salixos.org/akuna/testing ... h-1plb.txz
http://people.salixos.org/akuna/testing ... h-1plb.md5
http://people.salixos.org/akuna/testing ... h-1plb.dep

On this version, just for the sake of testing the concept, I added Terminal in a new category called Divers which does not run as root. This is important in case you want to add some of the Xfce setting tools to your control panel. They definitely should not run as root. This is not the final layout or choice of applications, This is only for the sake of testing that functionality.

For the moment, if you want to test the customisation functionalities, you can manually edit the categories in /usr/share/setupcenter/setupcenter_pref.py and the categories in /etc/setupcenter/cat*.list files

DONE:
- Finetune sizes & position
- Make preferences stick
- Hide categories with no items
- Add KDE support (not tested yet, please let me know if it work as it should)
- Add non-root application management
- Focus on only one application at a time in the single view layout

TODO:
- Customizing choice of applications in preferences in a GUI
- Customizing choice of categories in preferences in a GUI

Great work Akuna.
I presume "divers" is meant to be "drivers" ?
I did a quick mock-up. An inner border would be nice I thought, (Salix logo could be replaced with system settings icon).
