No. It is possible to use lvm with only one disk (my pc has only one). You can split then the partition into several volumes with dynamic sizes, also then dynamic sizes of the file systems on those.

Not really, but power consumption, cooling issues, noise level and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beat_%28acoustics%29 are the reason I don't want to use 2 discs anymore. Better buy a big new drive and sell the old one ;)

On an external drive. Never use an always mounted drive as backup drive :)
