Hello JRD;

I will test this iso exstensively
and will probably install it acros 3 computers
couple questions

1) can it be remastered?

2) is it built from reg salix pkg's or special ones?

3) Everything is like reg SalixOS install iso as in XFCE4, etc?

4) Is there a full source for the rc1 iso?

Thanks
and I'll report back with any issues, though I haven't had any with the beta2

Hi linus72,
linus72 wrote: 1) can it be remastered?
Depending on your skills, sure!
Like most Linux Live Scripts based Livecd it is merely a matter of changing default modules by your own.
2) is it built from reg salix pkg's or special ones?
Salix regular packages
3) Everything is like reg SalixOS install iso as in XFCE4, etc?
Like in Salix, you have the choice between core, basic & full install.
The default installation will install Salix Standard just like Salix regular install CD-ROM would.
4) Is there a full source for the rc1 iso?
Check Salix svn ;)
http://salix.svn.sourceforge.net/

Thanks that will be very helpful. :)

LOL

OK, here's my initial report, pre-install to HDD, post-install to USB:

notes:
first, I didn't really read the how-to
second, I didn't really read the how-to

mostly, when I get a live distro, I usually just sling it onto USB or boot it from HDD
also editing syslinux.cfg,etc

Well, I saw the grub2 runlevel 2 install parameter in syslinux.cfg(but ignored it)
I booted off USB....zzzzzzzziitiBANG!!
it hit the usb with Grub2!

DOH!
I know, I should of read about it

LOL
I didnt know grub2 could boot fat32 usb's?

so, now I'm booting SalixLive off fat32 usb usinf grub2?!
its all my fault
it works though so should I leave it or make usb ext2/ext3?

things I didnt like:
the splash kept breaking up(how do I turn it off?

its automounting all partitions
isnt "noagp" or some boot code to stop that?
I tried noagp and it didnt work?

anyway, great work, now I'll install to HDD!

OK
install to HDD from usb was partially successful

1st; I'm no fan of grub2 and wanted lilo
well, I only wanted lilo to know about salixos I was installing, not all my distros across 3 drives
and I couldnt seem to get this option
it kept wanting me to set every partition in lilo.conf

the lilo installer thing was very confusing and ended up failing to install lilo:(
luckily lilo was already installed to that parttion and I had another Salixos on hda7
so copied that lilo.conf over, edited it, and ran /sbin/lilo
success

Now, no internet at all?
why dont I have a internet connection?
I copied over /etc/resolv.conf from other salixos install
no dice

I installed the live kernel.etc

So, I need your help to get internet up?
If not I'm just gonna blast it off there

In conclusion so far

1) I think its bad idea to have syslinux.cfg setup to automatically install grub2 to someones usb
if someone used Unetbootin to put SalixLive on usb they would'nt appreciate what happens when they boot!

2) The live installer was great till it hit the lilo setup
it never said whether it was installing lilo to partition or MBR
and it failed to install

3) Why isnt internet up at boot?
how do I get it up?

4) whats the diference between default kernel and the live kernel
I installed the live kernel,etc

so, please help me get internet upthanks

Hi, thanks for testing.
linus72 wrote:first, I didn't really read the how-to

Please read it, especially the part about putting in on USB.
linus72 wrote:the splash kept breaking up(how do I turn it off?
If you want to see the boot messages, just hit escape.
linus72 wrote:its automounting all partitions

Not from now. Maybe for the next version.
linus72 wrote:1) I think its bad idea to have syslinux.cfg setup to automatically install grub2 to someones usb
if someone used Unetbootin to put SalixLive on usb they would'nt appreciate what happens when they boot!
Unetbootin is just a script to install syslinux in order to boot from fat32. grub2 can boot from fat32 and have also a editable menu.
Just follow the HOW_TO instead of using unetbootin. And I did not see any problem in installing grub2 instead of syslinux in a USB key.
linus72 wrote:2) The live installer was great till it hit the lilo setup

I can't help on that. From what I know, it's installing in the MBR.
linus72 wrote:3) Why isnt internet up at boot?

Dunno, is you network card detected ? Do you have an IP ? Is it a DNS problem ?
linus72 wrote:4) whats the diference between default kernel and the live kernel
I installed the live kernel,etc
The live kernel is just the standard kernel patched to have native USB support (not in module), Squashfs3+lzma.

Concerning LiloSetup, you probably would have had a better experience if you had taken the time to read the contextual help provided to you by the tooltips. ;)
linus72 wrote:well, I only wanted lilo to know about salixos I was installing, not all my distros across 3 drives

Not so... LiloSetup will show you all the 'booting' partitions available on your machine but will only actually configure the ones for which you provide a menu label & will ignore all others.
the lilo installer thing was very confusing and ended up failing to install lilo:(
Did you check /var/log/lilosetup log (as the error message probably hinted) to get some info on what went wrong?
2) The live installer was great till it hit the lilo setup
it never said whether it was installing lilo to partition or MBR
and it failed to install
Actually this information is provided in the above intro tooltip, however tooltips are not made to hold full contextual help... I will change this ASAP in order for contextual help to be more obvious & clear.

Thanks for answering Akuna

I'm not raggin on it or anything
I think its Great!

The internet thing has me confused though...I have over 20 distros on this PC
I dont have an internet issue with any of them nnor my reg SalixOS setup

I installed from live rc1 to a 6GB partition and no internet at bootup
though it did make the initial encrypted "keys" or whatever it is...

Everything I'm talking about is if I was a newbie windows user
I'm not:)

Many will atttempt to use Unetbootin to install it to usb

I'm gonna try a reinstall now

be back in a bit....

I'm guessing you went for a "basic" mode installation, instead of a "full" one. So wicd, is not installed, and network doesn't work by default. Which is absolutely normal. Just run netconfig and setup your network.
