I'm now back home and no longer have access to the troublesome computer. Here are the results of those mount attempts:

Code: Select all
root[one]# mount /dev/sg0 /mnt
mount: /dev/sg0 is not a block device
root[one]# mount /dev/sr0 /mnt
mount: special device /dev/sr0 does not exist
root[one]# mount /dev/cdrom /mnt
mount: special device /dev/cdrom does not exist
root[one]#

I'm pretty sure I used umount as requested, though since the mounts were all unsuccessful, presumably there was no need. This is just the tidied up version.

Yes, no need for umount in that case. Even if it worked they would just have been mounted on top of each other. Anyway that's what I expected, but it was worth a try. Nothing we can do about that like this.
It's probablya general problem between Salix/Slackware or possibly Linux or certain versions of it and that system.

Well, let's hope systems with those characteristics don't catch on more widely!

I'm sorry not to have had the chance to try it with other Linuxes, to establish a bit more about how specific or general the failure is.
