Salix 13.37 KDE on a HP Mini 210

Post by gaucho »

Hi,

I'd like to report that I was able to successfully install Salix 13.37 KDE (via a USB thumb drive) on a HP Mini 210 netbook. I chose the KDE edition because my son will also be using the netbook, and he is more familiar with KDE than Xfce and/or LXDE.

This machine has the notorious/infamous Broadcom 4313 chipset, so based on the discussion threads below, I knew that WiFi functionality wouldn't work with the stock Salix 2.6.37 kernel. Compared with Xubuntu 12.04 LTS (where wireless worked out of the box in a Live USB session), I knew that Salix would require more effort to set up. However, I thought that with Shador's excellent support, I could probably get the WiFi working. I really wanted to see if Salix would be a good match for this hardware ...

As it turned out, I did hit a few (minor) stumbling blocks which required some trial and error to solve. I still have a couple of questions but I'll ask them in the Broadcom thread below.

Please forgive me for posting a screenshot of the HP Mini with the wireless up and running:

Many thanks to everyone who made this possible -- especially to Shador :) for compiling the 3.3.6 kernels, making them available and providing clear instructions on how to install one. I would have had a very difficult time figuring out how to do that by myself. I'm grateful for everyone's help.
