I agree. I use openbox. Mate is much heavier. Previous slackel mate version released 4 years ago. This mate release made because previous mate version it was out of date and could not run anymore.

Just a question: why not connect the device before booting? Maybe scanning the devices occurred before you connected it this it was recognized soon enough by udev? Just a speculation...
