Re: Salix Live Xfce 13.37 RC1

Running live on a desktop, IBM ThinkCentre 8087-35M. P4 3GHz, 1 g RAM, no OS installed, Intel 82865G integrated video. Monitor is a Compaq FP7317 LCD. This does 1280x1024 preferably, but is running as 1024x768 with no option for 1280x1024 in the Xfce settings. A minor annoyance but one which does ta...

Re: Salix Live Xfce 13.37 RC1

Now posting from the ThinkPad R40 in live CD session - more egg on my face, but good news. This time round the machine booted without difficulty. Cosmic rays or a speck of dust on the CD? Anyway, OK for now. Will try booting again and see if the problem shows up.

Re: Salix Live Xfce 13.37 RC1

Booted live on Compaq Presario V6000 laptop, 1.6 GHz Celeron M, 2g RAM, i945 video. This machine's screen is cracked so requires an external monitor on the VGA port. Initially external screen remains blank, as the builtin LCD shows almost nothing, it's necessary to step through the couple of initial...

Re: Wicd - problem 13.37 64 bit

A quick web search on 'wicd bad password' reveals there seems to be a bit of this about in various distros. I didn't see The One True Answer - does the output of dmesg after a failed attempt reveal anything useful? If all else fails real men (and no doubt also real women) roll up their sleeves and r...

Re: Salix Live Xfce 13.37 RC1

Hmmm, about the wifi, keep calm and carry on . . . . :-) Sorry about false alarm. Trying again this morning, and find more normal results. Dmesg logs missing bcm firmware and message about getting it (b43/ucode5.fw) which is as expected when firmware is not present. The pc card wifi 'just works' as ...

Re: Puppy again, but wait... there's more!

Perhaps Puppy is only for the hobbyist, but imho it has to be classed as Linux. It gets a listing on Distrowatch and is currently in the top 10.

Personally I find it handy for burning CDs and DVDs while running live even in limited RAM, and watching DVDs, and occasional web browsing.

Re: Salix Live Xfce 13.37 RC1

About the R40 ThinkPad, not by me right now. Will try it again tomorrow and see what happens. It was an attempted boot from live CD.

Re: Salix Live Xfce 13.37 RC1

Booted live on a Compaq Presario V2000 laptop, Sempron 3000+ CPU 1.8 GHz, 1g RAM, Radeon XPRESS 200m. Getting some weirdness with wifi. Machine has bcm 4318 on board. No wifi interface seen. No complaints about missing firmware from dmesg. Inserted a pc card ath5k wifi which should be no firmware re...

Re: Salix Live Xfce 13.37 RC1

Tried to boot on a ThinkPad R40. No go. 'error symbol not found '' Entering rescue mode . . . grub rescue >' Machine is Pentium M 1.3 GHz, 1g RAM, Radeon Mobility M6 LY. It has no hard drive. Think this is the first time I have seen a fail to boot from live cd over a range of distros. Posting from i...
