Re: Improving Font rendering to reach Ubuntu quality
@gatewayasteroid I found that if I use "lxdm" or "slim" rather than "gdm" or console, the result is, I get crappy fonts with gtk apps (openbox and qt are ok). My ".Xresources" and ".fonts.conf" are exactly the same, wierd! I recall having the same p...

Re: Improving Font rendering to reach Ubuntu quality
For me, I see this is different than Ubuntu or Windows, but not worse or better, just different. So if the majority prefer the rendering used in Frugalware and if this doesn't break compatibility with Slackware I'm ok. I think it's a matter of physical screen size and resolution. I have a 19" ...

Re: Improving Font rendering to reach Ubuntu quality
Ultimately (read "when I can find time between about 100 others To Do items: :) ) I plan to propose a patch to the applicable package so that everyone can enjoy clearer fonts. If the experience of others is different then the proposal may be rejected. It's worth trying anyway. phayz, As a very...

Re: The means overcome the end
To solve the little problem with the fonts (in GTK environment), simply look at the file " CHANGES_AND_HINTS.TXT " from Slackware. The solution offered is: The (formerly) patented bytecode interpreter is now enabled in the freetype package, so your fonts might look a bit different. If thi...

Re: Improving Font rendering to reach Ubuntu quality
gatewayasteroid, Sorry - you might be right. I am not running SalixOS at the moment so can't be absolutely sure which package it was that I installed. I do know that on Frugalware Linux a patch was applied to the cairo package which improved the appearance of fonts on LCD screens, which is what my ...

Re: Improving Font rendering to reach Ubuntu quality
For the record the only Frugalware Linux package I downloaded and installed this time was "freetype2". Again the results are what I want - nice clear, crisp fonts. Again I don't recommend this approach to anyone else. If I understand correctly, the Frugalware freetype2 package has the byt...

Re: Improving Font rendering to reach Ubuntu quality
I really like Salix OS because if offers (almost) everything I could ask for in a Linux distribution. One thing worried me though: the fonts looked fuzzier than they do using my "usual" distribution of choice - Frugalware Linux. I read others' forum entries and tweaked settings but nothin...

Re: Improving Font rendering to reach Ubuntu quality
I usually have to add a .fonts.conf for Qt programs, & edit ~/.Xresources to get hinting looking right for gtk programs in Openbox as lxappearance doesn't set hinting (xfce hinting works fine). Best of luck, crappy fonts sux! Thanks I already have tweaked .fonts.conf and .Xresources in a simila...
